Viganj
is a small village and a port, situated on the southern side of the
Peljesac peninsula. Viganj is ideal for surfers because of its 260
sunny days per year which offer very favourable conditions for anyone
enjoying this sport. The combination of mistral wind and a crystally
clear sea further helps the admirers of surfing, thus succeeding in
atrracting people from all over Europe. The beach is 500 m long, and
for years now the Croatian competition in surfing is held in Viganj.
Besides the spacious main beach in Viganj, other smaller beaches could
prove to be ideal for those who enjoy more peaceful surroundings. Professional
athletes, as well as recreational ones, can often be found in Viganj
since it offers them preseved nature. In the village a school for
surfing and diving can be found, numerous coffee places, cocktail bars,
restaurants with a rich offer of traditional Dalmatian plates. Viganj
is situated only 3 km from the island of Korcula with which it is
connected daily via ferryline. Dubrovnik, which is about 100 km away,
can be visited, or the National Park Mljet which is situated about 30
km from Viganj. There is also a excursion site on the mountain of Sveti
Ilija (961 m). The gothic church of Sv. Mihovil is also very known, and
according to the Greek legend – Ulysees had used Viganj as an anchorage
for his galley.
